of a minor nuisance compared to this. as mentioned, fairfield fire officials are telling residents within a mile to stay indoors. and this is because of the situation with the smoke in the air, you can get whips of acrid smoke now and then. they're trying to figure out what damage in the ground may have occurred from these containers melting. these containers used to store items, macro plastic has been here 20 years, officials say there has never been a fire here. and the fire broke out back, residents going by noticed smoke and called officials when firefighters arrived and evacuated the whole place. there was a nearby travis air force base sent a number of firefighters to the area. and operation there are not affected. we saw cargo planes taking off and landing throughout the afternoon. and this smoke is starting to settle quite a bit more than it was earlier in the afternoon. there was an umbrella of smoke. there is dark back smoke and that is what officials are urging people to stay indoors. and there is when we'll see if anything changes, at this point they are telling everyone to st

to fairfield where they are having a conference after a giant fire. the company makes plastic containers and tons of them burned in this huge inferno and luckily the firefighters, a crew crew of firefighters that kept this thing contained to just containers because otherwise it would spread to the building so none of the employees was hurt. they think it happened from one of the employees lighting with a torch or something and caught a plastic container on fire, either a torch or lighter they were using and jackie is waiting for the press conference and as we look at the damage do you think they will talk about the cause or actually jackie is setting up as we are waiting. you can see this entire fence melted from that huge, just a fire ball. we were above from a chopper and you could feel the flames and see them for miles and they had dozens of firefighters out there. so as we look at the twisted metal from the fire. we are hoping they will talk about the investigation and what does it mean, work as usual or what they will be doing from the cleanup, we will have more as it happens and gi

at a plastics plant in fairfield. we brought you live pictures as all of this was unfolding yesterday. jane hernandez is there right now. what do you know? >> reporter: we've been checking with all of the people involved in this fire. i just spoke with a spokeswoman from the marcos plastics. the plant is still fully operational. 45 employees work at this facility. the spokesperson declined comment on camera or the phone. i learned that the fairfield fire department is holding a news conference in front of the plant at 6:00 a.m. that is about an hour from now. last night firefighters were monitoring hotspots. it does not appear that the firefighters are here anymore. fairfield fire is not saying one way or the other till the press conference. at this hour, we can tell that you five acres burned with an estimated 20 to 30,000 bins inside the yard at the time. firefighters likened the intensity of the flame to the heat of a tire fire. it break out shortly after 1:00 yesterday afternoon. and 45 employees were at the plant at the time. and it appears that a blow torch touched off flames and an e

in fairfield right across the street from travis air force base, it caught fire and soon erupted into a column tower of smoke. the mushroom cloud expanded literally obliterating sunlight from under it. the fuel, a field full of plastic bins. local officials called for a shelter-in-place since the bins contained particulate matter that is harmful for those with medical problems. >> although we don't see the black plume we're still recommending to folks. the wind conditions change and we did have the smoke level lower. we do recommend people with breathing issues to stay inside. >> reporter: fire units from all over the area including the big foam trucks from travis air force base responded. their efforts could only contain the base from surrounding buildings. the company has not discussed the fire's cause but would only say that noneover its 45 employees were hurt. for which most of us and certainly the company is grateful. back here below an awful toxic mess that will require a lot of clean up and a lot of toxic clean up to happen very soon. again as soon as all of the flair ups are over whic

pictures tell the story of an alarm fire at a plastics plant in fairfield. this had a community on edge for most of the day. black smoke poured into the sky. we are live on the scene with the very latest. >> remember the black smoke that we were to tell you--we were telling you about earlier, it has almost calm down. it is pretty much dissipated, you cannot really see any more but the firefighters are still on the scene making sure that this fire stays under control. >> this dark thick black smoke could be seen from miles away, large plastic containers like these that caught fire around 1:00 p.m. at this business in fairfield. this was the scene from sky for. you can see the firefighters tapping the blaze from different angles. there was concern that it was cryptograph area but the fairfield fire marshal said there were able to contain the fire to only about 5 a. in the back of the building. three fire fighters retreated from minor injuries. the cause of the fire was accidental but the fire marshal said this fire was started by employees using some type of open flame, possibly a torch

20,000 to 30,000 of these bins are stored. fairfield's fire marshal says it's a difficult fire to fight. >> because the bins are mass, hydrocarbon-based product, they put off an intense amount of heat. they are simple floor a tire fire. >> reporter: she says it will take a lot of water and a lot of time. they are also using afff foam, a lightweight foam very effective in fighting these kinds of fires. but it really is a waiting game as they wait for all the fuel to burn. the fire did spread to a nearby field. however, the weeds had been cut a while ago as a fire prevention measure so there was very little to burn and that fire was put out quickly. the hr director for macro plastic has nothing to say about how the fire started or their plans. but she was grateful that everyone got out okay. >> we're just very thankful that all our employees evacuated safely and we didn't have any injuries or anything like that. >> reporter: every fire agency in solano county is represented here including the travis air force base personnel. the air quality department is here to determine whether

in fairfield about the air quality from a massive fire yesterday. you could city from everywhere. the -- you could see it from everywhere. the smoke was visible as far away as sacramento and san francisco. stacks of plastic bins burned. firefighters from all over solano county fought the fire. three firefighters were treated for minor injuries. the fire started at the macro plastics, that's in a very light industrial area. it's a little north of travis air force base east of i-80. anne makovec is at the scene and learned that police will be holding a press conference shortly to fill us in. >> reporter: the fire is out but you can see a lot of the damage behind me in this field a big pile of ash that was once a huge stack of plastic crates and you can see off to the side, still some of the plastic crates that are impacted today. this is what was burning creating a show of fire and concerns for air quality. that fire broke out at around 1:00 yesterday afternoon here at macro plastics. check out this video from failed. it's near travis air force base. the fire was huge with thick, black smoke t

hosing it down. macroplastics is in fairfield. it's northwest of travis air force base east of interstate 80. the crews were called just after 1:00 this afternoon. thick, black smoke as you see, well that could be seen from sacramento, livermore, and san francisco. neighbors who live within a mile of those flames were told stay inside. robert lyles on what investigators think started it all. robert. >> reporter: just the past 30 minutes, that large platoon of firefighters disbanded, but they are still on scene as i step out of the way. that's evidence by that ladder truck that is still extended above a one story high pile of molten plastic. firefighters tell us what burned here was much more than produce crates. instead they describe it as gasoline in solid form. so they say that's why when a worker torched one crate, five acres of crates went up like a golden inferno. and you're about to learn why water pressure allowed this fire to grow out of control. >> how do you fight something that is effectively solid gasoline? >> it's very difficult. >> it's been high pressure hoses and foam

to death the two were on a date, she saw her boyfriend's alleged killer in a fairfield courtroom. he was arrested last night on murder charges. already behind bars on other charges. >> now i actually, you know, can actually see the person that has brought so much pain to this family. >> reporter: the victim's entire family showed up to see the suspect in court today. 24-year-old keith ford. they say rubin martinez had big dreams of going to college and being a success. >> his life was taken by a lost soul. >> reporter: investigators believe martinez tried to drive away after he had been shot. he lost control of his car and collided into a garage. he was pronounced dead at the scene, killed by gunfire. >> we ask the same question over and over. why him? he never fought. he didn't believe in fights. he believed in breaking up fights. >> reporter: investigators say the suspect is no stranger to crime. he has been arrested several times on weapons charges. detectives say this time ford left fingerprints at the scene of the murder. >> unfortunately for mr. ford here, he left his palmprin

at a fairfield plastics plant. this morning, a check on the health impact. good morning, it is wednesday, july 27. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm grace lee. busy morning here. we begin with a traffic alert this morning. a major off-ramp is closed in oakland after a chase and deadly crash. we are going right to kristy seifkin along interstate 880 with more on the officers who say they are about to open that ramp hopefully in the next hour. >> reporter: that's right. hopefully that ramp will be re- opened by 7:00 this morning. what happened was around 1:20, officers spotted and erratic driver in oakland. they attempted foul drive over but he got on northbound 880. he kept going for about eight minutes at speeds about 75 miles an hour. eventually, he did attempt to exit but was going so fast when he tried to exit at 29th avenue, he crashed into an area just under the underpass. he was ejected from the vehicle. he was taken to highland hospital and died shortly thereafter. healthcare hack has been investigating -- chp has been investigating the scene and thinks the driver may have been under the influen

now and we are reporting live from fairfield this morning after this huge fire that burned all of these plastic containers at the macro plastics complex and contained but the fire broke out at 1:00 and six alarms and tons of firefighters that responded to this and investigators believe it started by an employee who accidentally lit a plastic container with a torch or welder but the fire did not spread and that's because they had so many firefighters and sixty firefighters from fairfield and for nearby departments and they used 21 vehicles. for that blaze and three firefighters suffered injuries but no one else was hurt. jackie thistle is out there live. good morning, jackie. >> reporter: as the sun comes up you are getting a look at the aftermath that have fire and you can see how intense that fire must have been. that's a chain-linked fence that is burned over. we are starting to see activity at macros plant and starting the cleanup process behind that row of hedges right there and you can see the activity and they got some of the containers out of the way and some not comple

that fire. what is left of the fire at the macro plant in fairfield near travis air base, you can see there are just big hot spots. most of the fire is out, and john mentioned they're going to be on the scene quite a while. and the fire makes the kind of containers you can see holding fruits and vegetable autos for those living near the plastics plant officials are warning foam stay indoors and do not want people breathing that toxic smoke. and what is this like? have you been able to smell this stuff? >> we've been able to see it in the form of grass, burned grass. there is some pieces on the ground. you can see there is some black debris, mostly grass. so it appears in water, let's show you what the sky looks like now. there is a better, frankly than it did just an hour ago. right now, things have lightened up, but you can see around 4:00 this afternoon, there was a thick black plume of smoke rising into the air, and only about a half mile southwest of the plant that went up in flames. and there is one around 3:30. and i was standing there in the office and there is another one came
